How the WNBA Draft Works
Every year, the WNBA holds a draft where teams select players who are eligible to join the league. The draft typically has three rounds, and each of the league’s 15 teams gets one pick per round—though picks can be traded.
Before the draft begins, the WNBA Draft Lottery is held to determine the order of the top five picks. Only the teams that didn’t make the playoffs the previous season are entered into the lottery. This helps create competitive balance by giving struggling teams the first shot at elite talent.
The winner of the Draft Lottery gets the No. 1 overall pick—a prize that can alter the trajectory of a franchise instantly. In the 2024 WNBA Draft, Caitlin Clark arrived and immediately shattered viewership records while revitalizing the Indiana Fever. In the 2025 WNBA Draft, Paige Bueckers was the undeniable prize, a franchise cornerstone with star power to sell out arenas and the skill set to lead a team. Once the lottery is set, the rest of the draft order is determined by the reverse order of the previous season’s standings.

Yet, with 180 roster spots, the WNBA remains the hardest league to break into. Getting drafted puts you in the door, but it doesn’t promise you a seat at the table.
