How the WNBA Draft Order is Set

 

First Round: Lottery Picks (1-5)

  • The five non-playoff teams enter a weighted lottery for the first four picks.
  • Lottery odds are based on the combined record from the two previous seasons (worst record gets the best odds).
  • The fifth lottery team receives the remaining pick after the top four are drawn.

 

First Round: Playoff Picks (6-7)

  • Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire will likely pick 6th and 7th (order TBD).

 

First Round: Playoff Picks (8-15)

  • The eight playoff teams pick in reverse order in inverse order of the standings of their most recent regular-season record.
  • The team with the worst record among playoff teams picks at #8; the champion picks last.

 

Second & Third Rounds

  • The lottery does not apply to later rounds.
  • Picks are made in reverse order of the most recent season’s standings (worst team picks first, champion picks last).
